Well, I guess you’re wondering what you might get into now that the Fall season has begun. The kids are in school, vacation is over, perhaps your work load at the office is not too demanding: anyway, you’re finding yourself with a lot of time on your hands and you need something to do or you’ll go crazy with boredom. Relax, help is at hand… For some reason––I’ve not discovered what reason––Episcopalians are very good at volunteering their time in community projects or concerns. Be it assisting at the hospital or in the school, volunteering for this or that steering committee, serving on a local board of directors of some kind, or whatever, we are great at giving our time to our community. This says plenty for who we are as Christians: that we take the initiative to involve ourselves in the affairs of our community. It says that we can and do make a difference in the world around us. We are to be commended for such involvement. We can use that same volunteer spirit here at St. John’s. Take a few moments this next Sunday morning, as you are quietly and prayerfully waiting for worship to begin, and consider how your gifts and talents may best serve God in this place. Identify some parish ministry in which you have a particular interest and volunteer. Perhaps you can think of a different need or concern in the parish or community which you feel we at St. John’s might be able to address. Let your vestry or the appropriate committee chairperson know. (Don’t know who that is? Ask someone!) Your suggestions will be most helpful. You also might want to take a look at the St. John’s Most Wanted List elsewhere in this publication to see if there is some need you may fill in the parish. It is a blessing when so many people avail themselves of the opportunity to offer their time and talent for the greater good of the community. God is at work in such noble efforts. When we do the same for our Church we are doubly blessed. Thanks be to God!
